With the field events completed, the Vernon Lady Lions are leading the Girls Division of the District 7-3A Track Meet, while the Lions are in third place in the Boys Division. The track meet got underway Monday at Iowa Park with the field events and running preliminaries. The meet will conclude Thursday evening with the finals of the running events.
The Lady Lions won two events and placed in the top four in four other events on their way to collecting 53 points. Jacksboro is in second place with 52 points, and Holliday is in third with 49 points.
Key’Maria McBride took first in the triple jump with a leap of 37-feet, 9-inches, which is a personal best, a new Vernon HIgh School record, and ranks in the Top 50 in the state in Class 3A. Mari Johnson won the shot put with a throw of 37-feet, 4.5-inches, and she was second in the discus with a throw of 109-feet, 2-inches.
McBride was also third in the long jump with a leap of 16-feet, 5-inches. Klancy Sherrill was third in the high jump with a personal best jump of 5-feet, 1-inch, and Courtney Saylor was third in the pole vault after clearing a personal best 6-feet, 6-inches. Jasana Goodrum was fourth in the pole vault.
Analena Guerrero was fifth in the 3200-meter run, while Sherrill was sixth in the long jump.
The Lions took first in one field event and that was triple jump, with Julius Dawkins jumping 44-feet, 5-inches. Taking third in their events were T.J. Thomas in the triple jump with a leap of 42-feet, 3-inches, a personal best; Beau Gearld in the shot put with a throw of 45-feet, 1.5-inches; and Kameron Plyler in the high jump by clearing 6-feet even.
Israel Espinoza was fourth in the pole vault, while Adarius Williams was fifth in the long jump. Dawkins was sixth in the long jump, while Hyme Guzman was sixth in the discus and Jamari Chance was sixth in the triple jump.
City View is leading the boys’ division with 40 points, while Holliday has 32 points and Vernon has 31 points.
The finals of the running events will begin at 5 p.m., Thursday, in Iowa Park. The top four finishers in each field and track event advance to the Area Track & Field Meet.
