Our Vernon Lions claimed gold medals in two of the three relays and in four individual events at the District 7-3A Track & Field Meet held Monday and Wednesday at the Iowa Park High School Football Field. The Lions finished second in the overall team standings, and had Area Track Meet qualifiers in nine events. The top four finishers in each event advance to Area.

The defending state champion mile relay team picked up the district title Wednesday evening, as Ty Scott, Julius Dawkins, Jamari Chance and Jackson Aydelott turned in a time of 3-minutes, 24.36 seconds. The Vernon foursome of Scott, Chance, Jerick Weaver and Kameron Plyler won the 800-meter relay with a time of 1:30.90.

In the 400-meter sprint relay, the Lion team of Scott, Kale Sherrill, Weaver and Plyler finished fourth with a time of 43.52 seconds.

Aydelott also claimed gold medals in two individual track events and was named the MVP of the meet for the Lions. He won the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.38 seconds and took the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.40 seconds, which ranks in the Top 50 in the State of Texas.

Plyler set a new personal record Monday when he cleared 6-feet, 7-inches to win the High Jump. He also finished third in the Long Jump with a leap of 20-1.25.

The Triple Jump title when to Dawkins who had a jump of 42-7.5 to take the gold medal. Chance finished third with a jump of 42-1.

Finishing fourth in their events were Weaver in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.22, and Devin Arthur in the 3200-meter run with a time of 11:17.0.

Lions track coach Timothy Crosthwait said he was extremely proud of how the Lions competed at the district meet.

Holliday won the boys’ title with 160 points, while Vernon had 120, Bowie had 99 and Iowa Park had 77. Following the top four were City View, Jacksboro and Henrietta.

The Area Track & Field Meet will be held Thursday in Breckenridge.
