Fueled by claiming gold medals in three events, silver medals in four events and bronze medals in three events, the Vernon Lady Lions finished third in the team standings at the District 7-3A Track & Field Meet held Monday and Wednesday at the Iowa Park High School Football Field. Lady Lions qualified for the Area Track & Field Meet in 11 events.

Wednesday afternoon, the 800-meter relay team claimed first place with a time of 1-minutes, 47.67-seconds. Making up the relay team for the Lady Lions were Mari Johnson, Klancy Sherrill, Zayleigh Sweet and Key’Maria McBride.

McBride, Johnson and Sweet were joined by Kaleigh White on the 400-meter sprint relay and they finished second with a time of 50.33 seconds. Jeana Martinez joined McBride, Johnson and Sweet on the mile relay which also claimed second place with a time of 4:25.27.

In individual events, Sherrill was the district champion in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 47.84 seconds, and finished third in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.07 seconds. She was also second in the High Jump on Monday after clearing 5-feet even.

McBride claimed gold in the Triple Jump with a jump of 36-feet, 5-inches, and was third in the Long Jump with a leap of 15-10.25.

McBride and Sherrill were named Co-MVPs for the Lady Lions at the district meet.

Johnson picked up medals in two individual field events. She was second in the Shot Put with a throw of 38-10, and third in the Discus with a throw of 99-5.

Also qualifying for the Area meet was Courtney Saylor, who finished fourth in the Pole Vault after clearing 7-0.

Holliday won the girls’ district title with a total of 193 points, while Jacksboro was second with 122 points, Vernon had 114 points and Iowa Park had 69 points. Following the top four were Henrietta, City View and Bowie.

The Area Track & Field Meet will be held Thursday in Breckenridge.
