While the Vernon Lady Lions were unable to pick up any gold medals at Thursday’s District 7A&8A Class 3A Area Track and Field Meet, three Lady Lions qualified for the Class 3A Region 1 Track & Field Meet in individual events and in the 800-Meter Relay.
The 800-Meter Relay team of Mari Johnson, Klancy Sherrill, Zayleigh Sweet and Key’Maria McBride had a time of 1-minute, 45.16-seconds to finish second.
Klancy Sherrill also finished second in the 300-meter Hurdles with a time of 46.58 seconds, and Key’Maria McBride took second in the Triple Jump with a distance of 36-feet, 8.25-inches.
The top four places in each event qualify for the regional meet, and Klancy Sherrill will also move on in the High Jump after clearing 4-10 for third place. Mari Johnson earned a spot at the regional meet in the Discus after finishing fourth with a throw of 110-6. She just missed qualifying in the shot put, finished fifth with a throw of 34-0.
Klancy Sherrill also ran in the 100-Meter Hurdles at the Area Meet and finished sixth.
In the Mile Relay, Vernon’s team of Zayley Horn, Mari Johnson, Key’Maria McBride and Zayleigh Sweet finished seventh.
Named as Lady Lion Co-MVPs of the Meet were Klancy Sherill and Zayleigh Sweet.
The Lady Lions finished sixth in the team standings with 45 points. Holliday won the Area team title with a total of 152 points, while Jacksboro had 63 points, Brock had 61 points, Millsap had 49 and Eastland had 47 points. There were 14 teams competing in the Area meet.
The Class 3A Region 1 Track & Field Meet, which will be held next weekend.
