A few of those pathways start at Vernon Middle School as well. All incoming ninth graders choose a pathway as they enter VHS. All of the pathways offer industry based certifications that help the students in the workforce after graduation. The pathway in the spotlight today is Culinary Arts.
We held a senoff this morning for our film students who left this morning for the UIL State Film Festival. All three film entries advanced to the semifinals, with two moving on to the State competition which will be held tomorrow in Austin. https://youtu.be/BG1Bo_ySIiU

Parents of students who signed up to tryout for the 2026-27 cheerleader squad are reminded the last parent information meeting will be held at 6 p.m., Wednesday, in the VHS Cafeteria. If you did not attend the first meeting, which was held last week, you MUST attend this meeting if your child is going to try out for the cheerleading team.

We are having a sendoff for our VHS filmmakers who have advanced to the UIL State Film Festival. Two films "HIM IN BLACK: The Investigation" produced by Donivan Montano, Malakhi Propes-Scott, Jacob Brown, and Kenneth Cordero; and "A Tail of Two Lives" produced by Garrett Munson reached the State Finals in their categories. After the sendoff, which starts at 9 a.m., the Vernon Police Department and Fire Department will escort the students down Wilbarger before turning right on Main and leading them out of town. Dustin Swatzell is the sponsor of our film team.

A ceremonial First Pitch was delivered Friday evening prior to the Lions' 2026 home opener at Jabe Brazzle Field. The Lions and coaching staff honored VHS graduate and long-time baseball assistant coach David Ashby. A 1968 graduate of Vernon High School, David played for the Lions and returned as an assistant coach in 1990. Although he retired from VISD in 2016, David remains a fixture at the baseball field showing his support for the players and coaches.

The Lady Lions hosted the Vernon Girls Powerlifting Invitational Meet held Thursday evening at the Middle School Gym. Over 100 girls from area schools, along with Lamesa, competed in the event. This meet was the last opportunity for girls to lift the weight required to advance to the regional meet. Several of our Lady Lions hit personal best lifts at the meet. Several also wrapped up a spot in the regional meet.
There will be a Junior Class meeting Monday in the High School Cafeteria at 6pm.
With all four district representatives eliminated from the playoffs, District 7-3A has released its Girls Basketball All-District Team and three Lady Lions earned Honorable Mention recognition. Receiving that honor were Lily Beam, Lily Maxwell and Breasha Waggoner. Six Lady Lions made the Academic All-District Team. Earning that distinction were Nadia Gaines, Kenzie Dobbs, Lily Beam, Lily Maxwell, Callie Sanchez, and Caylee Streit. Congratulations to all!!!

Vernon ISD students get an early jump on a 3-day weekend tomorrow, as the district will be operating on its Early Release schedule on Friday. AND, students will not go to school Monday as it is a teacher workday, as we wrap up the 4th six weeks and prepare to head into the 5th six weeks. We hope our students enjoy their Monday and look forward to returning to the classroom on Tuesday!
The Boys & Girls Club will also be closed Monday. They will open early tomorrow.
The Texas Sports Writers Association released its Class 3A All-State team yesterday and we had six Vernon Lions who earned honors!!
Defensive lineman Adrain Felton was a First-Team selection, while offensive guard Manny Ochoa and linebacker Bowie Eakin made the Second Team. Honorable Mention recognition went to quarterback Ty Scott, all purpose Jamari Chance, and linebacker Tyce Payne. Congratulations to all!!

Today, Vernon State Hospital partnered with the VMS & VHS PTO to provide treats for our Teacher Appreciation Cart. Their team delivered goodies door to door and took the time to personally thank our staff. They also delivered goodies to teachers at the State Hospital South Campus.

The Lady Lions Vernon Invitational Powerlifting Meet will be held tomorrow at the Middle School Gym. Over 100 high school girls from across the area will be competing in the event, which is the last before the regional meet. The Lady Lions Vernon Invitational Powerlifting Meet will begin at 5 p.m. and admission is free.
Last night, Vernon ISD trustees named Dr. Blaise Boswell as the lone finalist for the VISD Superintendent position. Dr. Boswell has been serving as the interim superintendent for the last three months, and will officially become the VISD Supt. after the state mandated 21-day waiting period. Our Lions wrap up their 2026 basketball season tonight as they travel to Wichita Falls for a District 7-3A game against the City View Mustangs. There will be one boys JV game that will start at 5 p.m., and the varsity game will follow at approximately 6:15 p.m. Good luck Lions!!
