January is School Board Recognition Month and our Vernon ISD trustees found gifts from the district and each campus waiting for them at their regular monthly business meeting held Monday evening. Vernon ISD would like to thank our trustees for caring about our district, and for wanting nothing but the best for our students, teachers and all of our staff. VISD trustees include Carrie Hawkins, Patrick Parmer, Chris Lehman, Emory Byars, Jarrod David, Bryson Henry, and Amanda Lehman, who left the meeting before the photo was taken to attend a school activity her daughter was participating in.

Our Yearbook staff wants to show the 2025-26 school year through pictures, but they need help. If you have some great photos of student life or school activities, here is your opportunity to get them in the yearbook. Below are two ways to send your photos in to be considered for publication in the yearbook.

Our Vernon High School cheerleaders will be competing at the State Cheer Competition on Thursday in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex. We're sending them off in style Wednesday afternoon. The sendoff will start at 1:45 p.m., in front of VHS. The cheerleaders will then be escorted down Wilbarger Street by the Vernon Police and Fire Department as they leave town. Step out and cheer them on!!

On Monday, students in Coach White's Economic classes took a field trip to the Vernon City Hall to learn where to pay staple bills such as water and electricity. The City's Tracey Templeton and Lydia Garza spoke to the students about how to pay a water bill as well as factors involved with the bill process. The students also met with Vernon City Manager Darell Kennon and Mayor Pam Goslin. The students were also able to tour the old Vernon Lions Den that is located on the top floor of the old City Hall building. A big thank you to the City of Vernon for hosting our students. The trip was both a learning experience and a fun one!

Our Lions are back in the friendly confines of D.O. Fulton Gym tonight as they will host the Bowie Jackrabbits in a District 7-3A showdown. Boys' JV action will begin at 4:30 p.m., with the boys' varsity game scheduled for approximately 7:30 p.m., following the conclusion of the Lady Lions' game. Our Lady Lions are back home today for a District 7-3A contest against the Bowie Lady Rabbits. The game will tip off after the boys JV game, at approximately 6 p.m. Tickets must be purchased online at https://www.vernonisd.org/page/ticket-purchases

VISD is currently taking nominations for the Gifted & Talented Program. If parents would like more information on the GT Program, two meetings are scheduled for today: 1 p.m., at the VISD Administration Building Boardroom; and 6 p.m., in the Media Center at Vernon High School.

Wednesday morning Vernon High School will be hosting the ASVAB for all Juniors. If you receive a notification that your student is absent (and you know they are at school), please know we will take care of the attendance. It sometimes takes a bit of time to coordinate everything! Thank you for your understanding and patience!

Our VHS cheerleaders will be performing their State Competition routine for everyone tonight at D.O. Fulton Gym. The showcase will start at 7 p.m. Head out tonight and cheer on our wonderful cheerleaders who stay busy cheering for all of our athletes throughout the year!!
Also, a sendoff for the cheerleaders will be held at 1:45 p.m., Wednesday, in front of VHS. Once they leave the sendoff, the cheerleaders will be escorted down Wilbarger by our Vernon Police and Fire Departments. The cheerleaders will compete Thursday at the State Competition.

Everyone is getting back into the school routine this week as we head full steam into the Spring Semester, and with it being the middle of the flu season, Vernon ISD would like to remind parents and guardians of the documentation the district needs to receive when students are absent from school. The VHS chapter of Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) is partnering with the Wilbarger Humane Society to host an adoption drive on Saturday, Feb. 7, in the United Supermarket parking lot. The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. There are many animals in need of a loving home that are ready to meet their furever family!!
Can't adopt right now? You can still help by offering supplies or monetary donations. Stop by and grab a wishlist of items they need or scan a QR code at the event to make a direct donation. Are you interested in volunteering at the shelter? The Wilbarger Humane Society is always in need of regular volunteers and information on volunteering will also be available at our adoption drive event.
The adoption drive is a service project for our FCCLA chapter that will be used during a competition at their regional conference.

Two or three times during the months of January through April, Mrs. RaeAnn Stevens will be offering TSIA testing. Sophomores MUST pass the ELAR TSIA test to take dual credit English and U.S. History next year. VISD pays for a VISD student's first TSIA exam in both ELAR and Math if the test is taken on campus. We're just starting the Spring Semester, but May and the end of school will be here in a blink of an eye. We want to make sure our seniors, and their parents, know and understand the criteria requirements for seniors being eligible to participate in our Class of 2026 Senior Activities. Balfour representatives will be on campus Thursday to provide you with information on graduation caps, gowns and other items. This is just to provide you with information you can take home and share with your parents. Balfour will return later in the spring to take orders for caps and gowns.
