Good luck to our students competing in the District 7-3A UIL Academic Meet today and tomorrow. The meet is being held in Wichita Falls at the Vernon College campus.

We will have a sendoff in the morning for Justin Rejino, who will be leaving for the Boys State Powerlifting Meet. The sendoff will begin at 9:15 in front of Vernon High School and at approximately 9:30 p.m., the Vernon Police Department and Wilbarger County Sherriff's Office will escort Justin down Wilbarger Street. Park on Wilbarger and honk your horn, or stand along the street and cheer him on has they head out of town.

During Monday night's VISD board meeting our band state qualifiers and filmmakers who placed at their state competition were recognized by the trustees and Supt. Dr. Blaise Boswell. Roarin' Lion Band members who will be competing in the UIL State Solo & Ensemble Contest in May are Mariana Ortega, MuLay Paw, Jenniffer Lopez-Ramos, Rodrigo Olivas, Chloe Diekmann, Melina Ramirez, Jesse Mejia, and Inda Jani Reyes-Lopez. Our filmmakers competed in their state event last month and brought home a gold and silver medal. The production team of Donivan Montano, Malakhi Propes-Scott, Kenneth Cordero, and Jacob Brown won the state title in the Narrative Film Division, while Garrett Munson, who is a three-time state qualifier, took the silver medal for the second consecutive year in the Traditional Animation Division.

The VHS Roarin' Lion Band Winter Guard will be performing a Community Showcase at 6 p.m., Thursday, April 2, in D.O. Fulton Gym. Come on out and show your support for this wonderful group!

During last night's Vernon ISD board meeting, trustees approved the school calendar for the 2026-2027 school year. The first day of the 2026-2027 school year will be Tuesday, Aug. 11, while the last day of the school year will be Thursday, May 20, 2027. Key dates for the 2026-2027 school year include: Fall Break -- Oct. 16-19; Thanksgiving Break -- Nov. 23-27; Christmas Break -- Dec. 17-Jan. 6, 2027 (teachers return Jan. 4); and Spring Break -- March 15-19. There are 8 early release Fridays on the calendar, and 7 days designated as Professional Development, or a Staff Workday, when students will be out of school.

Our Lady Lions will be in Henrietta this evening for a District 7-3A softball game against the Lady Bearcats. The first pitch is set for 5 p.m. Good luck Lady Lions!!

Our Lions and Lady Lions golfers will tee it up this morning at the River Creek Golf Course in Burkburnett for the first round of the District 7-3A Golf Tournament. The second round will be held tomorrow at River Creek. Good luck!!

Students in AP World History began studying The Renaissance period last week and began gaining appreciation for the many works of art were completed during that time. One of the activities had the students attempting to paint Michelangelo's scene of evolution on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Students were shown a picture of the scene and then attempted to draw it -- while laying on their backs with their canvas taped to the bottom of their desk. This gave them just a small sample of how Michelangelo felt when he created his masterpiece at the age of 70, while lying on his back

Three of our Lady Lion powerlifters -- Kamryn Hall, Jeana Martinez, and Zayley Horn -- were named to the THSWPA Academic All-State 2nd Team. Kamryn and Zayley also qualified for the state powerlifting meet, which was held last week in Edinburg. Lady Lions Powerlifting Head Coach Sally Reeves said these three young ladies have demonstrated outstanding dedication, not only in athletics but in the classroom as well. She added their hard work, leadership, and commitment truly represent what it means to be a student-athlete at VHS. Great job ladies!! Congratulations!

Our VHS cheerleaders for the 2026-27 school year were selected following tryouts the week of spring break. Members of the cheerleading squad will be: Seniors -- Jenniffer Lopez-Ramos, Kaydence Smith, Lily Maxwell, Claire Mayo, Brek Payne, Alyssa Adams, Ariana Mendoza, and Sabriyah Hall-Dickerson; Juniors -- Abby Bolander, Xiomara Fernandez, Amari Garcia, Kaydence Richardson, and Arianna Granados; Sophomores -- Charleigh Cooper, Trista Lehman, Caylee Streit, and Serenity Edwards; and Freshmen -- Kinsleigh Hamm, Isabella Brahier, Yaryxel Fernandez (alternate), and Sophia Trejo.

Our Lions will hit the road this afternoon, traveling to Iowa Park to meet the Hawks in District 7-3A junior varsity and varsity games. The JV game will begin at 4 p.m., with the varsity game to follow at approximately 7 p.m. Good luck Lions!!

Two of the six Lady Lions who competed in the THSWPA State Powerlifting Championships yesterday will be bringing home hardware. In the Unequipped Division, Olivia Carr finished third in the 242-pound class, while four-time state qualifier Kamryn Hall finished fourth in the 242+-pound class. Great job ladies!! We're very proud of your accomplishments!!

An information meeting for parents will be held on Tuesday, April 7, in the VHS Cafeteria. The meeting will start at 6 p.m.

This Saturday!!!
Our VISD Community Resource Fair will be held in the VHS Cafeteria. Stop by and learn about the various agencies and organizations that provided services to our community. There will also be fun activities for the family including water balloons and outdoor games. Kona Ice will be on hand selling snowcones. More than 10 door prizes will be given away include two grand prizes -- a set of JBL headphones and an Amazon Echo Show 8. The event begins at 11 a.m. and will continue until 2 p.m.

On Tuesday, Vernon ISD held a CTE Fair for our 8th grade students. The students took a field trip to the Wilbarger County Expo Center where the CTE Fair was set up, with each of our CTE pathways having a booth manned by the teacher and high school students who are currently in the pathway. The 8th grade students were able to pick up information and ask questions about the different pathways. Students and their parents returned to the CTF Fair Tuesday night so the parents could visit the booths and get information about the pathways. All 8th grade students must choose a pathway before their freshman year. Also Tuesday night, students and parents were able to work on their class schedule for next year.

Vernon ISD Supt. Dr. Blaise Boswell introduced Brock Payne as Vernon's new athletic director and head football coach to all VHS athletes during a meeting earlier this morning. Vernon ISD trustees named Payne to the position during a board meeting last night. Payne and his family have been in Vernon for five years. During a special board meeting held last night, Vernon ISD trustees named Brock Payne athletic director and head football coach for the district. Payne has been a member of our VISD family for five years, serving as the Lions defensive coordinator and teaching Spanish, as well as wearing many other hats. Be watching for the story we will post later today.
