Our Vernon ISD Fall Break is officially underway. We hope everyone has a great loooong weekend and we can't wait to see everyone back in their classrooms on Tuesday!!
In a tribute to Gayla DeHoyos, and to provide financial assistance to her family, the Vernon Lions football team is selling a t-shirt for fans to wear at the next football game, Oct. 25. It is a black t-shirt with pink on the front for breast cancer awareness, and on the back is a cross and the initials M.G. Gayla, who was the VHS librarian, died suddenly and unexpectedly last Sunday afternoon. She was a huge supporter of all VHS students and most players on the Lions football team called her Momma G.
In a tribute to her the team wrote: "A bright light to our community that will shine forever. We dedicate this season to you. You are a pillar for this team, school, and town. Because of people like you, we are where we are today. Thank you for all you have done, Momma G. We got it from here so rest easy. -- Love, VHS Football '24."

Shirts will come in Wednesday and can be picked up from Coach Bah at the VHS Fieldhouse from 6:30 a.m. to 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday (Oct. 24), and 6:30 a.m. to 8 a.m. on Friday (Oct. 25).
VISD is participating in the Texas Education Agency's special education Differentiated Monitoring & Support process, and that includes a survey for anyone associated with the district -- parent, teacher, staff, and administrator. All information you share is confidential and will only be reviewed internally to assist TEA with the monitoring process. Last Saturday our Roarin' Lion Band competed in the Seymour Marching Festival. The band received a Superior Rating (1) for music and an excellent rating (2) for marching!! The band also received the caption for Best Auxiliary at the competition. Band Director Jeremiah Hastings said he and assistant band director Matthew Golden were very proud of the band's performance at the festival. The Roarin' Lion Band will compete in the UIL Region 7 Marching Contest this Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Wichita Falls. Vernon is scheduled to take the field at 9:50 a.m. GOOD LUCK BAND!!!!
Thanksgiving is 6 weeks away, but it's not to early to start training for the VHS Turkey Trot!! The 5K Turkey Trot will be held on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28, at Lion Stadium. There will be a Kids' Fun Run that starts at 9 a.m., with the 5K Turkey Trot set to start at 9:15 a.m. The deadline to register and secure a t-shirt is Nov. 13. The event is sponsored by Texas Farm Bureau Insurance in Vernon. The event is hosted by the Vernon High School National Honor Society and Student Council. All proceeds from the event benefit VISD at-risk youth.
Vernon High School has a student activity fund that is used to purchase items for the school store, which students can then purchase with Lion Bucks they earn by various ways at school. The activity fund is also used to fund the student incentive trips. If you would like to donate to the VHS Student Activity Fund, please scan the QR code.
Congratulations to Mrs. Stacy McNutt who won the annual VHS Staff Crockpot Cook-Off with her Taco Soup recipe. She gets to keep the traveling trophy for a year when she will look to defend her title. Great job by all who participated. The food was amazing!!
Tomorrow is Boat Day for students in Coach Kia Dixon's Math & Models class. As a class project, students were divided into teams and had to build a boat out of cardboard. Those boats will be put to the test Wednesday. Will the boats stay afloat or sink? We'll find out tomorrow!
With October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, our VHS Drill Team took a moment recently to show their support for those battling breast cancer. This Friday is the Lions' open date, but the next game is October 25 and that is the Lions' Pink Out Game, and fans are encouraged to wear pink.
Our Lady Lions on the road today, as they travel to Jacksboro for a District 7-3A showdown with the Tigerettes. The sub-varsity matches will begin at 5 p.m., with the varsity match scheduled to start at 6 p.m. GO LADY LIONS!!! CAGE THE TIGERETTES!!
GOOD LUCK!! To our Lions as they head to Plainview today for a Class 4A Team Tennis Regional Quarterfinal Playoff Match against Canyon Randall. The match will get underway at 11 a.m. The winner will play for the Region 1 title and a berth in the Class 4A State Team Tennis Tournament. GO LIONS!!!!
Tomorrow wraps up Hispanic Culture Month (Sept. 15-Oct. 15) and the students in Mrs. Patricia Barrera's Spanish classes presented the projects they've been working on in celebration of Hispanic Culture Month. For the project, the students were put into teams and each group was given a country of Hispanic origin to research. The students researched the country and selected a famous person from that country to also research and include in their presentation.
Our Vernon ISD family, and especially our VHS family, suffered a tough loss Sunday afternoon with the sudden death of Gayla DeHoyos. Gayla, a VHS graduate, joined VISD as a substitute teacher in 2002 and became a full-time employee in 2013. She served as the ISS instructor for many years before becoming the high school librarian.
Gayla cared very deeply about the success and well-being of each and every student, and was always there to listen if a student, or coworker, needed to talk. She became a “school momma” to so many VHS students. Gayla was also the Lions and Lady Lions biggest fan – no matter the sport or other school activity.
Our thoughts and prayers are with her husband, Tony, her children and grandchildren during this time.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, at Leo Brittain Field at Lion Stadium.
A Halloween-themed Blood Drive will be held tomorrow from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., in the VHS P.E. Gym. The Blood Drive is being hosted by the Vernon ISD Nursing Program. Appointments are welcome and can be made by scanning the QR code, or as always walk-ins are welcome as well! We would love the support from our community and hopefully meet our goal!

Our Lions overcame a slow start Friday night and went on to defeat Boyd, 41-21, in a District 4-3A, Div. 1 game. Vernon is now 5-2 for the season and 2-1 in district play. Leading the Lions to the victory over the Yellowjackets were:
Offensive MVP -- Carson Schoppa with 120 yards rushing on just 9 carries and 2 TDs, along with 2 receptions for 27 yards
Co-Defensive MVPs -- Javi Lopez, 11.5 tackles including 3 tackles for loss; and Tyce Payne, 12 tacklets, 2.5 tackles for loss
Ball Hawk Award -- Tru Gipson, 4 tackles including 1 tackle for loss and an interception
Big Stick Award -- Carter Kieschnick, 4.5 tackles and 1 interception
Lion Heart Award -- Landon Bynum, 5 tackles including 1.5 tackles for loss, a sack and a fumble recovery
Special Team MVP -- Donivan Montano, who led the coverage team with 3 special team tackles.
The Lions are open this week and return to action on Oct. 25 when they host the Bowie Jackrabbits in another district tilt.
Our VHS hallways were bright Friday with students sporting neon yellows and oranges with their construction gear as they enjoyed the dress-up theme of the day, which went along with the Lions Pride Pep Rally theme "Wreck the Yellowjackets." The Lions did just that Friday night, pulling out a 41-21 win in the District 4-3A, Div. 1 game played in Boyd.
Next week Vernon ISD has a short school week. We will have classes Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and then dismiss school for our Fall Break. Our Fall Break is from Oct. 17 thru Oct. 21. We hope everyone has a great, relaxing time during the time away from school, and we look forward to seeing everyone back on our campuses and in offices on Tuesday, Oct. 22.
Our Lions will be looking to pick up district victory No. 2 tonight as they travel to Boyd to face off against the Yellowjackets. It's another gold ball for our Lions tennis team as they defeated Lampasas 10-1 today in an Area match of the Class 4A Team Tennis Playoffs. Vernon now moves on to the Region 1 semifinals and will face the winner of the Brock-Canyon Randall Area match. The Region 1 semifinal match will be played Tuesday, however a time and site will not be known until the Lions know who their opponent will be.

The Vernon ISD Nursing Program will host a Halloween themed Blood Drive Tuesday from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm. Appointments are welcome and can be made by scanning the QR code, or as always walk-ins are welcome! We would love the support from our community and hopefully meet our goal! • Our local hospital’s blood supply is stocked with our donations - how cool is that?!
• Students of age 16 MUST fill out a permission slip and have it signed by a legal guardian to attempt to donate
• Only 3 in 100 people donate
• 17 years and older do not require a permission slip but must meet weight requirements among others during the screening process
• For every 1 donation you can save up to 3 lives
• You must have a valid form of ID. Ex. Driver’s license, Permit, or school ID card
• If you haven’t yet, at some point in your life you will meet or know someone who has had to receive blood
• Students who do not have an ID can you the yearbook but will need a copy of their transcript to prove their age for eligibility
