A few special awards were handed out yesterday at our Child Nutrition Services monthly meeting. Candy Cox received the September Employee of the Month award, while campus monthly achievement honors went to Karina Lira, McCord; Carmela Fuentes, Vernon Elementary; Luisa Zambrano, Middle School; and Yirian Ramirez, High School.
Those recognized for having perfect attendance for September were: Renea Branin, Amelia Chavez; Candy Cox; Amelia Escobedo; Carmela Fuentes; Alejandra Haines; Dorothy Mathis; Faye Montes; Beth Newton, Emma Ochoa; Marguerita Ramirez; and Yirian Ramirez.
Yesterday our CTE program hosted a luncheon for community business men and women. The goal of the luncheon was to bridge the gap between our students and local employers. Each teacher -- Elly Gonzales, Audrey Hastings, Candace Adams, Brooke Meinzer, Justin Stone and Jakelyn Quisenberry -- who teaches a CTE pathway class spoke about their pathway and the classes they teach. This let the local employers know what we are teaching and gave them the opportunity to help us by letting us know if we're missing something in the classroom that would benefit our students in their business. It also gave us the opportunity to show our students there are good places to work in Vernon and they don't have to leave Vernon to get a good job. All the food was prepared by our Culinary Arts students, and it was delicious!!
Our Lions tennis team is back in action today as they square off against Lampasas in an Area round match in the Class 4A Team Tennis Playoffs. Vernon defeated Hereford Tuesday to advance, while Lampasas defeated Decatur. The Area match will be played today at 10:45 a.m., in Mineral Wells. GOOD LUCK LIONS!!!

Our Lions cross country team captured third place in the District 7-3A Cross Country Meet held Monday in Burkburnett. By finishing third in the Boys Division, the Lions advance to 3A Region 1 Meet that will be held in Lubbock on Oct. 21 or 22. Members of the Lions team are Chris Calvillo, Devin Arthur, Julian Sauceda, Kavian Montoya, and Jackson Ochoa, who had the top individual finish for the team coming in 11th. The Lady Lions were unable to field a complete team, however Alyssa Andara, Emily Rodriguez and Karma Calderon participated as individuals in the Girls Division.
CONGRATULATIONS to our bi-district champion Lions tennis team. They defeated Hereford 11-3 today in Plainview in the Class 4A Team Tennis playoffs. Vernon will take on the winner of the Decatur-Lamesa bi-district match in the next round of the playoffs.
The VHS Mini Cheerleader Clinic for 2nd grade thru 5th grade students will be held on Thursday, Oct. 24. The clinic will take place from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., at D.O. Fulton Gym. Those students who take part in the clinic will then cheer with the VHS cheerleaders on the sideline during halftime of Friday night's game. The registration fee for the cheerleader clinic is $40. Forms and registration fees must be turned in at the student's school office by this Friday.
Receiving MVP footballs from Vernon's local Texas Farm Bureau Insurance Agency for their performance in last Friday night's thrilling 38-35 District 4-3A, Div. 1, victory over Ponder are Defensive MVP Tyce Payne and Special Teams MVP Mu Soe. Not pictured is Offensive MVP Ty Scott. The Lions will be on the road this Friday, as they travel to Boyd to face the Yellowjackets in another district battle.
Our Lady Lions begin the second round of District 7-3A volleyball action this evening as they travel to Holliday to face the Lady Eagles. The sub-varsity matches will begin at 5 p.m., with the varsity match set to get underway at 6 p.m. GOOD LUCK LADY LIONS!!!
Our Lions tennis team hits the playoff road today, traveling to Plainview for their Class 4A Team Tennis Bi-District Playoff match with Hereford. GOOD LUCK!!! Brand the Hereford Whitefaces!!! Offensive MVP -- QB Ty Scott who completed 7-of-9 passes for 200 yards and 2 TDs, and also picked up 151 yards rushing on 15 carries with 2 scores
Defensive MVP -- LB Tyce Payne who collected 11.5 tackles, including 2 tackles for loss, recovered a fumble and returned it 38 yards for defensive touchdown
Special Teams MVP -- K Mu Soe who drilled a 33-yard field goal with 8 seconds left for the game-winning points. He also went 5-of-5 on PATs and made 3 big tackles on special teams
Ball Hawk -- DE Bowie Eakin who had 8 tackles, including 2 tackles for loss and 2 sacks, and recovered a fumble
Big Stick -- S Carter Kieschnick who had 7 tackles and forced a fumble
Lion Heart -- DE Landon Bynum who had 5 tackles, including 1 sack, and forced a fumble.
Congratulations!! Great job to all the Lions for the big win!!
The VHS first 6 weeks incentive trip was today, and 151 students took a trip downtown to watch "The Wild Robot" at the Vernon Theater. That's 31 percent of our high school students which is outstanding!! The trip included the movie, a drink and popcorn.
Today's Lion Pride Pep Rally theme is "Moonwalk Across the (Ponder) Lions" and it was Michael Jackson Day throughout VISD. There were some great MJs walking around the halls of VHS today!!
Our Lions are back home at Leo Brittain Field tonight for a District 4-3A, Div. 1 showdown with the Ponder Lions. Vernon comes into the game with a district record of 0-1, while Ponder is 1-0. Each month during the school year VHS selects two Students of the Month from each grade level, with the overall Student of the Month selected from those 8 students. VHS also award Teacher and Staff of the Month honors. Honored as September Students of the Month were: Freshmen -- Georgia Balderas & Sylus Belcher; Sophomores -- Myka Lopez & Damien Perez; Juniors -- Kyndell Horn & Peter Din; and Seniors -- Carolina Horn & Adarius Williams. Yesterday, Tracy Catlin, the CTE Director at the Vernon College Wichita Falls campus, spoke to our VHS seniors about the possibilities Vernon College has to offer our seniors after graduation. We appreciate Mrs. Catlin spending the day at VHS and introducing our seniors to the VC experience.
