Friday morning MVPs from the Lions' game last week against City View received their MVP footballs from our local Texas Farm Bureau Insurance agency. Those MVPs were: Parker Flynn on offense; Tyce Payne on defense; and Mu Soe on special teams. Congratulations guys and thank you to Texas Farm Bureau Insurance for providing the footballs.
It was neon bright in D.O. Fulton Gym this morning for the Lion Pride Pep Rally theme of "Blind the Bombers" with Neon Dress-Up Day. The 4th and 5th grade students from Vernon Elementary joined in the fun and had a great time. They won the class cheer competition!! The Lions face the Frederick Bombers tonight in their final non-district game. The Lady Lions host Jacksboro in a district volleyball match that begins at 4 p.m., with the varsity match.
The students in Brett White's Pre-AP World History classes have been discussing early civilizations and were given the task of learning the 72 day process of mummification. Each group of students had to use "fine linen, herbs and spices" as well as write their names in hieroglyphics. Teachers were brought in to grade each mummy. Coach White said a great job was done by all of the students.
Our Lions are looking to bounce back from last week's loss and back into the win column tonight when they host the Bombers from Frederick. Action will kick off at Leo Brittain Field at Lion Stadium at 7 p.m. Halftime will feature performances from our Roarin' Lion Band and VHS Drill Team. Our Lady Lions will be working to pen the Tigerettes from Jacksboro this afternoon in their District 7-3A volleyball game at D.O. Fulton Gym. The Lady Lions are 0-1 in district play. Students in Ms. Kristyna Butler's art class are putting their talents to work this week as they paint the Vernon logo on the Vernon Athletic Booster Club's Swag Wagon.
The Lions and Lady Lions competed in the Seymour Cross Country Meet yesterday and for the second year in a row, the Lions captured the Boys Division title. Vernon had 5 runners place in the Top 15 and 4 finished in the Top 10. Great job and congratulations!!
Wednesday morning, members of the VMS & VHS PTO provided a yogurt parfait treat to the staff at those 2 campuses, as well as to the staff at the Opportunity Center and DAEP. The traveling yogurt bar was stocked with a variety of sweet and crunchy toppings.

Next Tuesday, Sept. 24, our Vernon ISD Social Worker Nicole Cameron will be hosting a parent informational meeting on "Vaping Prevention." The presentation will help prepare parents to reach their children and teach them to make healthy decisions regarding vaping. The presentation will begin at 6 p.m., at the Vernon Elementary Cafeteria. It is open to ALL VISD parents, but those with children in the 5th thru 11th grades are highly encouraged to attend, as this is the age group vaping companies target the most.
September is Suicide Prevention Month and today VISD Social Worker Nicole Cameron gave a presentation on suicide awareness to students in Ms. Dalene Hamer's classes.
Our Lions tennis team improved to 2-0 in district team tennis competition with a 16-3 victory over Graham Tuesday evening. The Lions have 2 more district matches -- Holliday on Sept. 28 in Wichita Falls, and Burkburnett on Oct. 1 at home. They will be back in action on their home courts this Saturday when they host All Saints in a non-district match.
It was "Teacher Appreciation Day" at the VHS tennis courts prior to the Lions district match against Graham. Each varsity tennis player selected a teacher to recognize, and they presented a letter they had written and a tennis t-shirt to the teacher during yesterday's ceremony.
Our Lions tennis team is 1-0 in district play and will host the Graham Steers today in another district team match. Action will start at the Ruben Vargas Tennis Complex at 4 p.m. Good luck to our Lions!!
Our VHS cheerleaders are conducting a cheer clinic for pre-kindergarten thru 1st grade students on Thursday, Oct. 3, at D.O. Fulton Gym. The clinic will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The next night, on Friday, Oct. 4, the youngsters who attend the clinic will perform with the cheerleaders on the sidelines for the first half of the football game. Forms are available at McCord and VHS, and can be turned in at your child's school office. A clinic for older children will be held on Oct. 25.
On Monday, our VHS PALS students traveled to Legacy High School in Wichita Falls for a training session involving PALS students from area high schools. Guest speaker for the training was Tory Gant, who spoke on teamwork, leadership and professionalism. Students also took turns presenting skits on character traits to the other PALS students. Mrs. Audrey Hastings is the PALS sponsor.
Since Frederick does not have a JV football team, we have had a change to our JV football schedule. Our JV Lions will now be traveling to Burkburnett on Thursday to take on the JV Bulldogs. Game time is 5 p.m.

"Make the Stangs Crazy" was the theme of the Lion Pride Pep Rally this morning, as the Lions will be hosting the City View Mustangs tonight. The dress-up day was Circus Day. We had visitors this morning for the pep rally, as 2nd and 3rd grade students from Vernon Elementary walked over and joined in the fun.
Today's pep rally theme was "Make Those Stangs Crazy " and it was Circus Day throughout the district. Several VHS students and teachers joined in on the dress-up fun!
