Students in Coach Dixon's Math Models class were tasked with building a boat out of cardboard that would make it one lap in the pool. That's where the fun began. Last Saturday the Vernon Roarin' Lion Band competed in the UIL Region 7 Marching Contest. The band earned an Excellent Rating (Division 2) from all three judges. That is the second-highest rating a band can receive. Band Director Jeremiah Hastings said the band performed one of its best-sounding shows of the year! He added that he and Assistant Band Director Matthew Golden are very proud of the students' hard work, growth and performance this marching season and look forward to what they will achieve throughout the rest of the year and beyond!
Our Lady Lions are back home tonight for a District 7-3A showdown with the Henrietta Lady Bearcats. A victory over Henrietta will keep the Lady Lions in the hunt for a playoff spot!! Our Lady Lions are on the road this morning taking on the Iowa Park Lady Hawks in a District 7-3A game. The Lady Lions are 3-5 in district play and are in the hunt for a playoff berth. The JV games will begin at 10 a.m., with the varsity game to follow at 11 a.m.
Our Vernon ISD Fall Break is officially underway. We hope everyone has a great loooong weekend and we can't wait to see everyone back in their classrooms on Tuesday!!
In a tribute to Gayla DeHoyos, and to provide financial assistance to her family, the Vernon Lions football team is selling a t-shirt for fans to wear at the next football game, Oct. 25. It is a black t-shirt with pink on the front for breast cancer awareness, and on the back is a cross and the initials M.G. Gayla, who was the VHS librarian, died suddenly and unexpectedly last Sunday afternoon. She was a huge supporter of all VHS students and most players on the Lions football team called her Momma G.
In a tribute to her the team wrote: "A bright light to our community that will shine forever. We dedicate this season to you. You are a pillar for this team, school, and town. Because of people like you, we are where we are today. Thank you for all you have done, Momma G. We got it from here so rest easy. -- Love, VHS Football '24."

Last Saturday our Roarin' Lion Band competed in the Seymour Marching Festival. The band received a Superior Rating (1) for music and an excellent rating (2) for marching!! The band also received the caption for Best Auxiliary at the competition. Band Director Jeremiah Hastings said he and assistant band director Matthew Golden were very proud of the band's performance at the festival. The Roarin' Lion Band will compete in the UIL Region 7 Marching Contest this Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Wichita Falls. Vernon is scheduled to take the field at 9:50 a.m. GOOD LUCK BAND!!!!
Thanksgiving is 6 weeks away, but it's not to early to start training for the VHS Turkey Trot!! The 5K Turkey Trot will be held on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28, at Lion Stadium. There will be a Kids' Fun Run that starts at 9 a.m., with the 5K Turkey Trot set to start at 9:15 a.m. The deadline to register and secure a t-shirt is Nov. 13. The event is sponsored by Texas Farm Bureau Insurance in Vernon. The event is hosted by the Vernon High School National Honor Society and Student Council. All proceeds from the event benefit VISD at-risk youth.
Vernon High School has a student activity fund that is used to purchase items for the school store, which students can then purchase with Lion Bucks they earn by various ways at school. The activity fund is also used to fund the student incentive trips. If you would like to donate to the VHS Student Activity Fund, please scan the QR code.
Congratulations to Mrs. Stacy McNutt who won the annual VHS Staff Crockpot Cook-Off with her Taco Soup recipe. She gets to keep the traveling trophy for a year when she will look to defend her title. Great job by all who participated. The food was amazing!!
Tomorrow is Boat Day for students in Coach Kia Dixon's Math & Models class. As a class project, students were divided into teams and had to build a boat out of cardboard. Those boats will be put to the test Wednesday. Will the boats stay afloat or sink? We'll find out tomorrow!
With October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, our VHS Drill Team took a moment recently to show their support for those battling breast cancer. This Friday is the Lions' open date, but the next game is October 25 and that is the Lions' Pink Out Game, and fans are encouraged to wear pink.
